The Lanhardt House Custom Dollhouse

One of my first projects for 2020 is Lanhardt House. This is a commission. The house is several of my past cottages all mashed together.
I use tempered hardboard to make the shell of the house. This material has a couple of benefits over other woods and boards. First, it's always straight - no warping.  Second it's lighter than other materials. It's important for me since I ship all these houses. And third, something I learned from a customer, they are more allergy friendly than other treated materials.
The house is designed from scratch and cutout of tempered hardboard using a scroll saw.
This house is 22 3/8" wide x 14 3/4"deep x 18 /14" tall(for now).

I start the house inside lower level. First the wood floor(Popsicle sticks) gets glued in. The plaster goes on the walls and ceiling. Then everything is painted. I use acrylics.  The floor color is a water based gel wood stain.
Other materials are added like the birch strips that go on some walls and ceilings.
The downstairs rooms are 8 3/8"tall.

I finish off the downstairs interior with chandeliers and aging. I use stamp inks andapint to make everything perfectly cottage.
 I added the stairs.
And I made a little fireplace to tuck behind the stairs.
The entry has picture molding. It adds so much elegance.

The above picture is a little nook with it's own chandelier. It will be perfect for a table and chairs or a sink.
There is a tin ceiling here. Perfect for a kitchen. Also there is a nice long wall here to add a stove.

Lots of chandeliers. But it needs to be very romantic!

Next, the wood floor went in upstairs. And then the hardest part of this house- the roof. Cutting the angles correctly is a bit of a puzzle.
The plaster goes on where it needs to be.
The upstairs is 8 1/8" tall.
Thanks for coming over!
hugs,

  6. This is going to be gorgeous!
What thickness of tempered hardboard do you use? Since I live in a humid climate and have trouble with even thicker birch plywood warping, I want to try this.

    Thanks!

  7. Thank you so much for your generosity with sharing your wonderful talent with us. I found your posts about three months back and thought your houses were beautiful and wished that I could make something that “looked just like that.” Then, as I read more, I started to realize that I might be able to do this myself. I’ve been studying and planning for several months now, and am almost ready to build. I want to review electrics again. I was surprised to learn that I my favorite style is actually mid-century modern comfortable furniture in saturated colors with a background of European white stucco house (which actually is similar to yours). You have taught me a lot, and I want to thank you! I hope you have a wonderful year!

    1. Oh Kathy! That is such a nice comment! I am so happy to hear that I made this less daunting. My advice is always just go for it. Any mistakes can be fixed(after you go eat a snack!) LOL! And I do still make plenty of mistakes- especially with my roof angles. But if you don't like something you just paint over it or cut a new piece out. No big deal! I hope you will have the most terrific time with your new adventure.
      big hugs,

  10. I purchased two of your guides and I’m so happy to start a new hobby. You mentioned shifting yo tempered hardboard here for weight — do you still use cement as well for your plastering? I’m trying to find things that aren’t too heavy and won’t irritate my skin but boy is the hardware store intimidating! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!

  13. Cool job surely. The idea of using tempered hardboard was really innovative. The windows, stair, wood floor looks so beautiful. Hope the final finish was eye-catching. Anyway, I would like to share a help for the home owners in San Francisco. Whenever they need any concrete job, concrete contractor San Francisco may be great support for them.
