The Christmas Window Custom Dollhouse

The Christmas Window dollhouse is finished.  Kellie I hope this is all you dreamed it would be.

This house reminds me of a snowstorm because of the colors. Grey skies, snow and a cozy fire inside of course!

The exterior is all done with plaster.  The links for the products I use are on my resources page.  The snow is a product called Snow-Tex. It's the best I've found. It stays in place and dries hard.

Found a photo of a bike in a window on Pinterest for my display window inspiration. You know how I love little bikes!

The fireplace is done with premixed concrete.

The twigs are from a Crepe Myrtle. They are pretty pliable.

I made the icicles with hot glue. Just pumped out a little hot glue stick with a tail on my glass cutting board. The glue stays crystal clear and easily detaches from the glass. You could use any glass surface or even a plate. Anything smooth and cold.

This house is furnished.

 A cozy, toasty living room. I made the chair, rug, chandelier and decorations.

 The white garland on the fireplace is a green holly garland I dipped it cream paint and glitter.

 My youngest sister made all the Christmas balls. They turned out fantastic and so real looking. She used beads, paint, and glitter. The mirror frame is by Shabby Chic Treasures are Hobby Lobby. I used a mirror paper from the scrapbook section.

 I found the lights for the tree where I buy all the battery operated lights: https://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/collections/hobby-leds/products/warm-white-or-cool-white-strings  I used the 12 light string on this Christmas tree from Hobby Lobby.

 The plaster looking frames are from Melissa Frances.

 The Santas in the tree and on the mantel are from Hobby Lobby in their tiny Christmas tree decorations (1:1 section).

The snow in my tree is actually pompoms from a pompom yarn.

 I got both my ladders and the work table from ebay. I made the stool.

 The wood box with the wrapping paper was a tool box that came with the metal hammer, plyers, scissors(Hobby Lobby).  I just painted it and rolled up some pretty paper to put in.

 The little chair is a regular chair from Hobby Lobby I covered up with lace trim and cushion. On top I put a tray of Christmas ornaments.

 I made the table, added a rose embellishment, paint, aged it with ink pads.

 I made the trumeau mirror. I have no idea where I got the angel. It was just in my collection waiting for the right project. The teal frame was from Michael's. But that was a long time ago.

The Christmas Window Custom Dollhouse

This new Project is a Christmas themed dollhouse.  It's called The Christmas Window because Kellie who ordered it has always dreamed of decorating store display windows.

I wanted to show you the humble beginning of a custom dollhouse. I get so many comments, emails and messages from potential miniaturist architects afraid to take the plunge into building. 

It's a very simple process. Basically you are doing 3 walls, a floor or 2 and a roof.  Doesn't have to be complicated as far as the shape. What counts is the details.

So here goes!  The house is made of hardboard(link on resources page). This product is better than a plywood type of product because it's straight! Nothing worse than realizing the walls are warped.

I put the walls together with hot glue. This acts as my clamp. No need to wait 2 hours for glue to dry with clamps.  Go back with glue over your seams to hold everything nice and tight.

Next the wood floor(Popsicle sticks).  You can also hot glue it in place. Or use traditional glue.

Then plaster(resources page) your walls. The above photo is the living room. It has some picture molding made with Popsicle sticks cut lengthwise.  The flowers are made with cardboard covered with layers of paint.

This is the workroom.  It will have the stairs in here. The display window in the front has a little stage box for the display.

Next, the upstairs.  I did the pitch of each roof panel by taking 2 inches off each side of the top. Then I went around the house one side at a time until I got to the front. The panel above the door was a bit different. I had to take 2" off one side of the top and add 2" on the other side.  If you can't figure out the measuring just take a piece of wood, put it in place and mark where your cuts need to be.

You will need to put your downstairs lights in place before you do your upstairs flooring.  I also put my working mantel in place.

On this side of the room I left my walls without picture molding. I didn't want to have the room be too stuffy.

I'm keeping everything very vintage looking as always.  These 2 windows are from Hobby Lobby.

Just working upstairs now.  There will be plaster and wallpaper up here. Also a beam ceiling. This is the bedroom.
